Stream Restoration and Greenway Trail

Extreme makeover! Stream restoration work on this section of Little Sugar Creek is now finished. The Greenway along this part of the stream is also complete.

Uncapping
In 2007, Storm Water Services ripped up and removed the concrete, culverts and parking lots that covered the creek.  950 feet of "cap" was removed in this section. 

Stream Restoration
Removing the cap showed just how neglected this stretch of Little Sugar Creek had become.

Transforming the ugly duckling into a showcase swan included:

  • Adding meandering turns to reduce bank erosion
  • Creating deeper pools and shallow rocky sections to support aquatic life
  • Reshaping banks
  • Removing concrete and weeds from banks and adding lush, native vegetation

 

Cost of Stream Work: $820,000

Sources of Funding:
NC Clean Water Management Trust Fund: $393,600
Local storm water fees: $426,400
