CMS South Park Watershed Enhancement

The CMS South Park Watershed Enhancement Project is the implementation of a series of storm water treatment techniques (Best Management Practices) grouped within a single watershed for the purpose of testing BMP effectiveness alone and in conjunction with one another. Storm Water Services will seek as many opportunities as feasible to treat and implement storm water pollution controls on the CMS South Park campus.

Project Goals:

1) Storm water treatment of the runoff generated at the site;
Storm water runs across building roofs and the parking lots picking up pollutants in its path such as dirt, oil and litter
2) A secondary water source for plant watering through storm water reuse;
Storm water can be collected and reused for irrigation purposes
3) Detention to control storm water peak flows to reduce erosion or flooding, if appropriate;
Water that moves across impervious areas such as roofs and parking lots, moves quickly into streams and can cause erosion of the stream banks. Detaining the water temporarily and discharging it slowly into nearby streams can reduce stream bank erosion and flooding.
4) Stream restoration, if appropriate;
Streams naturally have curves and gently-sloped banks. Urban constraints often re-align streams and cause banks to erode. Stream restoration is the process of returning streams back to a more natural state.
5) Storm water and BMP educational opportunities for school students and the public;
Explaining to the students and public the features of the storm water project is a high priority for Storm Water Services. Education can come in many forms including signage, lectures, student participation, etc.
6) Monitoring program to measure the success of the implemented storm water treatment methods;
Periodically, Storm Water Services will take measurements of nearby streams and project features to determine the success of the project. Monitoring data is currently being gathered to provide a reference point to compare with the project improvements.

Status Update:

  • Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services (CMSWS) met with CMS officials on April 25th, 2006 to present the project team and discuss the project goals.
  • CMSWS met with Charlotte Mecklenburg Utilities on December 6, 2005 to discuss possible coordination between the Briar Creek Sewer Relocation and this project. It was determined that since the CMSWS project is looking to monitor Briar Creek Tributary #1  and not Briar Creek (where the CMU work is occurring) that the two projects will remain separate.
  • CMSWS has received a CMS South Park Site Feasibility Report.  That report was finalized on August 20, 2007.
  • Preliminary planning has begun.  A total of eight BMP options at 6 site locations are being studied.

Approximate Project Schedule:
The planning phase for this project is currently underway and will be completed by the end of 2008.

The design phase is anticipated to last for 1-2 years.

The construction phase is anticipated to last for 1-2 years.
