As a water quality initiative, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services repairs and rehabilitates ponds and dams within the Charlotte city limits. Ponds that meet certain criteria in size, depth, contributing watershed, and condition qualify for service. The city ranks ponds by size, watershed development, and dam condition. Generally, larger ponds in highly urbanized areas provide larger benefits, including slowing down floods and removing sediment from storm water runoff.
Currently, the City initiates 1-2 rehabilitation projects a year. The projects are scheduled according to a pond's public benefit ranking.
