Rain and Stream Gauges

Storm Water Services in cooperation with USGS maintains a network of 73 rain gauges and 33 stream flow gauges throughout Mecklenburg County. During a rain event, data is transmitted from these gauges  to base stations located at USGS and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center (CMGC).

This information is then relayed to additional computer base stations located on the City/County Wide Area Network. The base stations use a software package called DiadVisor, manufactured by OneRain. The software keeps track of all the data coming in and organizes it by time.

Rain gages are often in unique locations throughout the county such as the gauge located atop this tower constructed by The Boy Scouts of America. Locations such as this allow the gauges to collect rain without obstruction from trees and buildings.

In addition to the data being collected by DiadVisor, the information collected from rain gauges is also transferred to our Interactive Mapping web site where you can view rainfall data collected at each gauge.  For more information, please contact Amy Rockwell, arockwell@ci.charlotte.nc.us , 704-336-5779.

Many of the 73 rain gauges are located on the rooftops of public schools and there is also a gauge located on the roof of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center.
