CAUSE OF LAKE WYLIE FISH KILL IS UNKNOWN
Charlotte, North Carolina – More than 2,000 dead fish have been detected in Lake Wylie in both Gaston and Mecklenburg Counties south of Hwy. 27 and north of Wilkinson Boulevard. The fish kill is being investigated cooperatively by staff of the N.C. Division of Water Quality and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services. A cause has not yet been determined but the investigation is ongoing. As of this afternoon, water quality measurements collected in the field indicate normal water quality conditions along this stretch of the lake. Today's investigations show that additional fish are not dying and live fish are observed in the area. Water samples have been collected and delivered to the laboratory for analyses to better assess water quality conditions. Results are expected by Friday, June 6, 2008.
Since the cause of the fish kill is unknown at this time, swimmers, boaters and fishermen are advised to use discretion in the area of Lake Wylie in both Gaston and Mecklenburg Counties south of Hwy. 27 and north of Wilkinson Boulevard. Upon receipt of laboratory analyses, additional information regarding water quality conditions in this stretch of Lake Wylie will be made available.
