TMDL Implementation Strategy
TMDL stands for Total Maximum Daily Load. It refers to the amount of a particular pollutant allowed in a stream in a given day.
Charlotte has TMDL's for the following streams:
Sugar Creek, Little Sugar Creek, and McAlpine Creek.
These creeks were identified by the State of North Carolina as water bodies that do not meet the minimum water quality standard for fecal coliform, due to point sources, urban runoff and storm drains.
A TMDL Implementation Strategy has been in effect in Charlotte-Mecklenburg since July 1, 2003. The goal of this strategy is to reduce fecal coliform bacteria levels in Sugar, Little Sugar and McAlpine Creeks and restore water quality conditions.
