CURB IT! Collection Services Update

  • CURB IT! collection likely to be delayed for the remainder of the week
  • CURB IT! garbage and recycling are collection priorities
  • Yard waste routes may be suspended in Charlotte’s north, south and east areas
  • Customers should place items at curbside as normal and leave there until it is collected.

July 26, 2004  (Charlotte, NC) – Solid Waste Services CURB IT! collection programs will likely be delayed for the remainder of the week.

On Sunday, July 25, 32 City Solid Waste collection vehicles at the Louise Avenue equipment lot were vandalized.  The damage to the vehicles includes broken mirrors, deflated tires and body damage from deliberate truck collisions. Twenty-two of the 32 trucks were severely damaged and will be inoperable for at least two weeks.

Garbage is currently being collected on Monday routes in the north, south, and east collection zones, but it is likely that service will not be completed.  Monday routes that are not completed today will be completed Tuesday prior to starting collection for Tuesday’s customers.  This could potentially delay garbage collection for the remainder of the week.

Recycling and yard waste routes are operating, but not all routes are being collected.  “We are placing priority on collecting garbage and recycling,” said Wayman Pearson, Solid Waste key business executive.  “We will continue to assess our progress and adjust our operations to ensure we are able to complete all of our garbage and recycling routes this week.”

This is what is known:

  • Crews began collection today between 10:30 a.m. and noon.
  • Garbage is being collected on all Monday routes in the north, south and east collection areas.  Five recycling routes are not being serviced, and at least three yard waste routes are not being serviced.
  • Yard waste collection may be suspended this week to assist in collecting garbage.
  • Only bulky items previously scheduled for collection will be collected this week.  Customers who call to schedule bulky items this week will receive collection during the week of August 2, 2004.
  • This morning, collection crews began servicing:
    • North zone in the Highland Creek, Mallard Creek and W. Sugar Creek areas.
    • South zone in the Carmel Road, Johnston Road and Ballantyne Commons areas.
    • East zone in the Weddington, McKee Road, lower end of Providence Road, Ballantyne and Hwy 521 areas.
  •  Although collection will be delayed in the north, south and east, customers in Charlotte’s north collection zone will be impacted the most.  Customers on Charlotte’s west side, the area under contract with a private contractor, are not expected to experience an impact in service.

The service delays could potentially impact service for 147,000 customers.  Customers are asked to be patient.  “We are making every effort to collect on schedule, but may have to delay collection the remainder of the week,” said Pearson.  “Customers should place their items at curbside as normal and leave it there until it is collected.”

A route status update will be provided Tuesday morning.  Ongoing route status updates, service information and collection maps are available at http://curbit.charmeck.org or by calling Solid Waste customer service at 704.336.2673.

City officials will continue to investigate this incident, but plan to have the lot monitored from 10 p.m. – 6 a.m. daily starting tonight.

The City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services CURB IT! collection program provides collection of residential garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky items from curbside once a week on residents scheduled collection day.  Customers seeking updated service information should call Solid Waste customer service at 704.336.2673 or log on to http://curbit.charmeck.org.
