Charlotte
, N.C.
—Charlotte City Manager Pam Syfert has appointed Victoria Garland, director of Solid Waste Services.  Garland served as interim director, while the City conducted a national search for a successor to Wayman Pearson, who retired in December.

“As part of the national search, we looked for the best Solid Waste director, and the process confirmed we already had the best candidate,” Syfert said.  “I know Victoria will continue to shape and implement new and better ways to serve the citizens of Charlotte, and I expect great things from her.”

Garland
will manage 260 employees, who provide garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection to 190,000 Charlotte households.

“I am honored to be named the new director for the Solid Waste Services Department.  Most of my professional career has been in anticipation of this moment,” said Garland.  “When the opportunity arose, I joined the City of Charlotte because its solid waste operation was one of the most innovative in the industry.  And in my new capacity, I plan to continue this tradition of innovation.”

A graduate of Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida, Garland has 23 years of experience in the solid waste industry.  Before joining the City in 2005 as deputy director of Solid Waste Services, she served as assistant director of Solid Waste Management for Miami-Dade County.
