On October 1, 2005, the City of Charlotte will reduce the solid waste collection service provided to multifamily communities under the City's Multifamily Refuse and Recyclables Collection Contract. Allied Waste Services (CCC), a private solid waste management firm, is the city's service provider for collection service to multifamily communities. Read below for answers to frequently asked questions about the multifamily service collection changes.
Q. How will my multifamily collection service change under the new contract?
A. On October 1, 2005, the collection frequency of bulk containers will be reduced to one-half the number of authorized collections. The City-funded service to your multifamily complex will change as follows:
· Dumpsters that currently qualify for two collections per week will qualify to receive one collection per week.
· In a similar manner, a compactor that now qualifies for two collections will receive one authorized collection per week.
Q. Can I request additional collection services if needed?
A. Yes. If a multifamily community adds supplemental collection service, the community must pay for the cost of collections that exceed the authorized collection frequency. However, the City will continue to pay for the disposal of collected waste that meets certain conditions. The City must be able to account for supplemental waste tonnage. For that reason, Allied Waste Services has been designated as the private contractor that multifamily communities must use in order to have supplemental waste disposal costs (landfill fees) paid for by the City. Allied Waste Services' supplemental collection rates are $15.00 for each collection of a dumpster or open top container and $145.00 for each collection of a compactor or closed top container. If a community contracts for supplemental refuse collection with a firm other than Allied Waste Services, the community will be responsible for all associated charges including waste disposal.
Q. How do I determine the service frequency for my contractor?
A. To calculate the service frequency for your communities' compactor:
1. Divide number of units in complex by 90.
2. Multiply by 16 (possible trash yards in an 8-yard compactor each pick up)
3. Divide by size of compactor (A 24-yard compactor is the minimum size compactor used to determine collection frequency)
4. Divide by 2; Round to the nearest whole number. (A container will qualify for at least 1 collection)
5. This will give you the authorized collection frequency.
For example:
· 380-unit community ÷ 90 units = 4.22
· 4.22 x 16 = 67.55
· 67.55 ÷ 40-yard compactor = 1.68
· 1.68 ÷ 2 = .84 = 1 collection per week.
· Authorized collection frequency = 1 collection per week
