Garbage Collection

 

Residential Collection
The City of Charlotte sponsors the CURB IT! program, which provides garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky item collection services for single-family residences and multi-family complexes with fewer than 30 units in the City of Charlotte boundaries.

Garbage is collected from Charlotte residents by City of Charlotte crews once a week except for holidays.

To verify your collection day visit the Address Information Center, and follow the steps below:

  • Enter your name, address, or parcel ID.
  • Click on the submit button.
  • Click on the services tab.

The Rollout Cart
Rollout Cart Questions?

Each household is assigned one 96-gallon garbage rollout cart.  The rollout cart is for disposing of regular household garbage only; recyclables and yard waste should not be placed in the rollout cart.   

Please place your cart within 2 feet of the curb and with the handle toward your property.  To avoid property damage, please space collection items at least 3 feet apart.  Also please allow 3 feet between your rollout cart, recycling bins, yard waste, bulky items and other obstacles such as mailboxes, telephone poles and automobiles.

Please place your rollout cart at the curb no later than 6:30 a.m. the day of your scheduled collection day.  Your cart must be removed from the curb by midnight on the day of collection.  A minimum $50 citation may be issued if you leave your cart at the curb past midnight on your collection day.

What to place in the rollout cart

  • Regular household garbage
  • Old clothing
  • Paper products
  • Dried paint cans without lids
  • Kitty litter and soiled infant diapers (double-bagged)
  • Other miscellaneous items

Please bag all items prior to placing them in carts; items placed outside carts will not be collected. 

Garbage placed outside the rollout cart will not be collected. All garbage should be placed in plastic bags, prior to placing in the rollout cart. Cardboard and cardboard boxes can be recycled.  To order an additional rollout cart, please click hereHouseholds are limited to two rollout carts. 

What NOT to place in the cart

  • Dead animals (Click here for dead animal collection information)
  • Empty cardboard (please cut, do not fold, into 3X3 feet pieces and stack neatly at curbside)
  • Recyclable materials (please place in recycling bin)
  • Yard waste
  • Hot ashes
  • Motor oil
  • Solvents
  • Wet paint
  • Pool chemicals
  • Flammable liquids
  • Other hazardous materials not previously mentioned

Household Hazardous Waste
The City of Charlotte crews will only collect the following household hazardous waste materials:

  • Dried paint cans with lids removed
  • Kitty litter double bagged in plastic and securely tied
  • Soiled infant diapers, rinsed and placed in double plastic bags and securely tied.

The City will NOT collect:

  • Dead animals
  • Hot ashes
  • Motor oil
  • Solvents
  • Wet paint
  • Pool chemicals
  • Flammable liquids
  • Other hazardous materials not previously mentioned.

Building Materials
Building materials resulting from homeowner repair MUST BE SCHEDULED for bulky item collection and it will be collected by City of Charlotte crews. These materials include:

  • Plumbing materials
  • Space heaters
  • Hot water heaters
  • Doors
  • Rolled and tied carpet and padding (no longer than 4 feet)
  • Lumber/boards (no longer than 8 feet with nails removed or flattened)
  • Fencing (rolled into sections less than 6 feet)
  • Plywood/paneling (no larger than 1 inch x 4 feet x 4 feet)
  • Landscape timbers (less than 8 feet long and less than 4 inches in thickness)
  • Windows/mirrors (with glass taped and "X" marked so it does not shatter when collected

Building materials will not be collected from any multi-family residential unit except condominiums. Contact a private waste company or landfill to discuss disposal of these items.

The City WILL NOT COLLECT the following.

  • Dirt, rocks
  • Nails or boards with protruding nails
  • Propane/oxygen tanks
  • Glass blocks
  • Marble or simulated marble countertops
  • Railroad ties
  • Duct or sheet metal materials
  • Concrete blocks, brick
  • Floor coverings (unless it's carpet/padding installed by homeowner)
  • Fence posts with concrete attached
  • Sand
  • Concrete
  • Pallets
  • Central air conditioning or heating units
  • Ceramic tile
  • Sheetrock
  • Roofing
  • Plaster or any materials resulting from contractual work or commercially-related activities
  • Automobile parts including motors, doors, fenders, car seats, or batteries.

Contact a private waste company or landfill to discuss disposal of these items.
