Solid Waste Services' staff provides strategic planning and problem-solving services to neighborhoods to prevent and respond to community solid waste issues. They have developed a program to address a serious issue in Charlotte communities – the accumulation of junk at the curb, or as they call it, unscheduled bulky items.
The program, dubbed Call and Send, is a partnership between Solid Waste Services, neighborhoods, and the City's Neighborhood Development department. The program, which has been implemented in five Charlotte neighborhoods, has produced a 58% reduction in unscheduled bulky items.[1]
The program's success prompted staff to formally organize the program for implementation in all Charlotte neighborhoods.
Is the program right for your neighborhood? Neighborhoods suffering from an accumulation of junk at the curb should consider implementing Call and Send's Neighborhood Training program. The Call and Send program may not be right for every neighborhood, but scheduling bulky items is for every Charlotte resident…including you. Items such as household furnishings, household appliances, mattresses, box springs, lawn equipment, and similar junk items too large to be placed in the rollout cart are considered bulky items.
