Introduction This summer, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Department began developing a land use plan for the Catawba Area. The plan is expected to focus on land use, transportation, environmental and community design issues. It will serve as a guide for future growth and development decisions.
The plan area encompasses approximately 4,800 acres and includes the US National Whitewater Center, a new public elementary school, Whitewater Academy, off Belmeade Drive, and several new and existing neighborhoods.
Public Input Opportunities Citizens are encouraged to participate in the planning process over the next several months. There will be numerous opportunities for public input:
- Attend a public meeting where staff will introduce the plan and receive comments from the public about the future of this area. (The meeting was held on August 5, 2008 at the Shady Brook Baptist Church, 2940 Belmeade Drive).
-
Participate in a citizen/stakeholder group that will assist in the development of the plan. Interested individuals may either volunteer at the August 5th public meeting or contact city staff noted below. While no special expertise is necessary, volunteers are expected to attend all scheduled meetings. There is a time commitment of two meetings per month, on average, over a period of approximately six months (August-December 2008).
- Additional public meetings will be scheduled in early 2009. Watch this website for more information.
