THOUSANDS OF CITIZEN VOLUNTEERS HELP BUILD 'RACE PLAYCE' ACCESSIBLE PLAYGROUND AT NEVIN PARK
About 4,000 citizen volunteers are helping this week to build Mecklenburg's first fully accessible playground in Nevin Park. Volunteers are individuals, church groups, employee groups, clubs, etc. Construction shifts each day, through Oct. 5 run: 8am–12:30pm, 12noon–5:30pm. 5pm–until after dark. Skilled and unskilled volunteers help with construction, hospitality, first aid, children's activities, etc. The playground is named "Race Playce", a play area without barriers, accessible for all children regardless of abilities. It has a NASCAR racing theme with play areas around an oval track. Watch progress on a camera overlooking the site. Anyone who wants to help may report for a shift. NEW SOCCER FIELDS NOW OPEN AT MALLARD CREEK PARK TO SERVE THE GROWING SUBURBAN DEMAND FOR SPORTS
Park and Recreation "kicked-off" three new soccer fields last month at Mallard Creek Community Park. County Commission Chairman Jennifer Roberts and dignitaries kicked soccer balls to officially open the fields. Construction of fields, restrooms, concession building, parking, etc. were paid for by park and rec bonds approved by voters in 1999 and 2004. The soccer fields serve heavy demand for a popular sport in the University Area. Many new sports facilities (and other facilities) are included in the November 4 Park and Rec bond referendum. See full list of proposed projects.

"E-PLANT TIPS" FOR AUTUMN FROM THE NC COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SERVICE (which operates in Mecklenburg as a division of Park and Rec)
Fall is the time to control certain broadleaf weeds in the lawn including chickweed, white clover, dandelion, wild onion, plantain, and Canada thistle. Cut down stems and foliage of herbaceous perennials when the leaves begin to brown. Add mulch to your perennial border. A one inch layer of weed-free straw or chopped leaves will help conserve soil moisture, protect the roots, and reduce plant loss from soil heaving during the winter. Cut back perennial herbs to encourage well-branched growth next year.
