Charlotte, NC—Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department invites interested citizens and news media to the official grand opening ceremony on Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 10am for the new Robert Caldwell Bradford Park in Huntersville. The park is at 17005 Davidson-Concord Rd.
Bradford Park provides a major, much needed recreation facility for Huntersville, Davidson, Cornelius and the rapidly growing suburbs of northern Mecklenburg County.
The park property covers more than 210 acres, and Phase I cost more than $5.2 million. It represents a unique partnership among Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation and the Parks and Recreation Departments of the Towns of Huntersville and Davidson. Mecklenburg County contributed $4.2 million toward land acquisition and construction. Huntersville contributed more than a million dollars. Huntersville, in collaboration with Davidson, will manage the park under a long term lease agreement with the County.
Phase I of the park covers 56.3 acres and includes:
- 3 Soccer Fields
- 4 Lighted Softball Fields
- A Lighted Baseball Field
- Picnic Shelter
- Restrooms
Future phases of this park will be built as funds become available
The park is named for Robert Caldwell Bradford (known as Caldwell), lifetime resident of Huntersville, whose family lived on this land for more than a century. Caldwell, his wife Mamie and their sons were dairy farmers. They ran Hiwassee and Hunter Dairies, well-known throughout Mecklenburg County. The County purchased the land for recreational use.
Speakers at the grand opening include representatives of Mecklenburg County, Huntersville, Davidson and of the three parks departments in the partnership. Dignitaries will all help throw out a ceremonial first pitch on a new ball field
