Charlotte, NC— Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department and the Tarheel Trailblazers celebrate a new mountain bike trail and arrival of two “hand cycles” (for people with leg disabilities) at a special event at 10am April 5, 2008, across from the entrance of Jetton Park, 19000 Jetton Road, Cornelius. Parking will be Jetton’s Waterfront Hall, with a shuttle van to the trail, or riders may bring their own mountain bikes to the event.
The hand cycle mountain “trikes” will be on display and demonstrated at the new 1.1 mile, beginner mountain bike/adaptive sports trail on a 19 acre site called Jetton II. Brief remarks will be made at this event by County officials and representatives of Tarheel Trailblazers and Transamerica Reinsurance, which donated funding to purchase the two hand cycles at $5,000 each.
During the past year, Tarheel Trailblazers volunteers worked a total of 750 hours building the mountain bike trail on Park and Recreation property.
The hand cycles are kept at the Cycle Path bike shop in Cornelius, a 10 minute drive from the Jetton trail. Anyone wishing to borrow the cycles should contact Mark Sullivan, proprietor of Cycle Path, at 704 869-3331. The hand cycles are FREE to borrow by anyone with a valid NC driver’s license and a credit card.
