Charlotte, NC --  Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation invites interested citizens to an open discussion about the future of the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center at 6:30pm Wednesday, April 2, 2008 in the former Second Ward High School Gymnasium.  The gymnasium is beside the Aquatic Center which is at 800 East Martin Luther King Boulevard (across McDowell Street from the Blake Hotel). Free parking is available.

This discussion will be led by the aquatic consulting firm of Counsilman-Hunsaker, which was commissioned by a private group of aquatic users working with Park and Recreation to conduct a feasibility study about a potential expansion/renovation of the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. Scot Hunsaker will also assist in considering issues of design, programming, cost and income of an expanded/renovated facility. Hunsaker leads an consulting team that handles more than 100 aquatic projects a year, many for colleges, park and recreation departments, and YMCAs.  Since 1970 Counsilman-Hunsaker has conducted more than 130 feasibility studies of aquatic facilities.

The firm seeks comments and information about potential programs for public recreation, infant swimming, adult fitness programs, water polo, synchronized swimming, and competitive events for swimmers of all ages. This study will also consider Masters swimming events and the possibility of hosting events for elite competitors that will draw spectators. The possibility of adding a second 50 meter pool at the Aquatic Center is expected to be discussed.

This public discussion will help Counsilman-Hunsaker assess the wants and needs of citizens for this project. 

The Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center is 17 years old.
