Reedy Creek Nature Center Hosts Hummingbird Festival, A Great Free Family Activity, Saturday, August 23
July 23, 2008

Hummingbird
Charlotte—Most hummingbirds in the Carolinas make a remarkable journey to get here. These tiny, fascinating creatures with buzzing wings migrate to Central America for the winter, and most fly about 500 miles, nonstop, across the Gulf of Mexico to return to North America for spring and summer. The only common species in this area is the ruby throated humming bird, among the fastest flying birds in the world. Many return year after year to the same yards and feeders.

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation hosts its second annual day-long festival celebrating ruby throated hummingbirds Saturday, August 23, 2008 at the Nature Center in Reedy Creek Park and Nature Preserve, 2900 Rocky River Road.

The festival is FREE from 10am – 4:30pm. It features hummingbird banding by ornithologist Susan Campbell, who will hold these flying jewels in her hand and carefully attach bands to their legs. The bands will help ornithologists all over America record hummingbird travels. The festival includes fun games, crafts, vendors of hummingbird product, face-painting and storytelling about hummingbirds for the entire family.  While there are no fees, donations will be accepted for the nature program.

Mecklenburg County's Dr. JB's Hummingbird Products will be displayed and available for purchase.  Meet and talk with Dr. JB about how to create a hummingbird haven in your back yard! This event will be held rain or shine. Dr JB's Hummingbird Products is principal sponsor of the event. Chirp 'N Chatter and Partners for Parks are also sponsors.

For more information contact 311 or Staci Clark at the Reedy Creek Nature Center, 704 598-8857 or staci.clark@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov.

More than 180,000 people have visited Mecklenburg County's nature preserves. Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation manages 14 preserves totaling 5,783 acres (not all are yet open to the public). The preserves include three nature centers and save habitats for endangered plant and animal species. Check www.parkandrec.com for more information or call 311.
