LEISURE & RECREATION - Winter 2008


The TR Division provides many wonderful leisure and recreational opportunities for individuals of all ages with disabilities.  The TR staff assists the individual in enhancing their leisure and recreational experiences by offering a variety of activities that include but not limited to:

"Might as well JUMP!"  That is "jump" into some very exciting programs the TR Division offers.

Winter 2008

TR Division Dances-for teens and adults 13 and d older.    

Come to the Marion Diehl Recreation Center and dance the night away with your friends old and new.

Supper Club-for ages 13 and older with disabilities.  Please Note: The Supper Club is held one hour before the TR Division Dance

Come join your friends for dinner before the dances!  You will enjoy a healthy meal while getting ready to dance the night away!                   Participants will be meet at the Marion Diehl Center from 6:00pm-7:00pm.  Fee: $7.00 You must be registered one week in advance.  For more information contact Monica R. SCHOOL DAY-OFF PROGRAMS

School's Out Club for Teens-ages 13-21 with disabilities.   Come spend your days out of school with a great group of teens!  Fun and adventure are waiting for you...Please bring a lunch and drink on each date - snacks will be provided.  Location: Marion Diehl Recreation Center.  Dates:  Jan. 21, Jan 22, Feb 18, Feb 19  Time: 8:30am-4:30am.  Fee:  $35.00.  For more information, please contact Karen Howard at 704.336.2344 or Angela Conti at 704.336-7639.

 

SOCIAL GROUPS & EVENTS

Young Adult Club-for adults ages 18-35 with a developmental disability.  Join the club!  Spend your Friday's with friends enjoying a variety of leisure activities.  Location:  Marion Diehl Recreation Center, 2219 Tyvola Road  Dates:  Jan. 25th (Checkers Game), Feb. 22nd (Davidson College basketball game)  Bring extra money for snacks if needed.  Time:  6:00pm-9:00pm (unless otherwise noted).  Fee: $15.00 per date.  Please bring extra money for snacks if needed  Contact:  Monica Best at 704.529.2627.

Teen Club - for ages 13-21 with disabilities.  Join the club!  Spend your Friday's with friends enjoying a variety of leisure activities.   Bring extra money for snacks if needed.  Location:  Marion Diehl Recreation Center, 2219 Tyvola Road.  Dates:  Sept. 21 (Festival in the Park), Oct. 12 (Roller Skating), and Nov. 9 (Charlotte Checkers Game). Time: 6:30pm-9:00pm.  Fee: $15.00 per date.  Contact: Margot Howell at 704.432.4289.

Guy's Night Out - for young men 13-21 with disabilities. This overnight experience gives young adult and teen males an opportunity to enjoy and benefit from community outings and involvement.  Location: Marion Diehl Recreation Center, 2219 Tyvola Road Date: Sept.1-2 (Drive in Movies), and Oct. 13-14 (College Game Night) Time: 6:00pm Saturday - 10:00am Sunday. Boogie Night Dances - for adult mental health consumer, ages 18 and up. Looking for something to do on a Friday night?  Come get your groove on at our dances!  These dances will provide a great opportunity to meet your friends, make new friends and practice the latest dance moves.  Enjoy DJ music and refreshments.  Location: Inner Visions Drop-In Center.  Dates: Oct. 12 & Dec. 7. Friday Fun Lock-In - for ages 21 and older with disabilities.  Spend the night with us as we follow the themes of Teen Club.  On Saturday, we'll prepare a healthy breakfast.  Don't forget to bring your sleeping bag, pajamas, and toiletries.  Please let us know if you have any food allergies when you register.  Location:  Marion Diehl Recreation Center, 2219 Tyvola Road.  Dates: Sept. 21 and Nov. 2.  Time: 9:00pm-9:00am.  Fee: $35.00.  Contact: Margot Howell at 704.432.4289 or DeMarcus Steele at 704.568.4044.

Fashion House Rocks--for teens and young adults, 16 and older with disabilities.  Could you be the next undiscovered fashion talent?  Maybe you are just a stylish soul waiting to blast out.  Fashion House Rocks is the mobile to get your creative juices flowing with endless results.  We will learn to make various accessories and other designs from pillows to purses.  Come on out and leave your designing doubts at the door.  We will take a trip to visit fashion in its full spectrum at a local designing school.  We are going to rock the house with...FASHION!  For more details, contact Monica Best at 704.529.2627. 

VIP Travel Club-for adults with a visual impairment.  Enjoy the day with friends!  We will travel around town to experience what Charlotte and the surrounding area has to offer.  Please bring money for lunch.  LocationMAB, 704 Louise Ave. Dates: Aug. 31 (McGill Rose Garden and Johnson & Wales), Sept. 19 (Mountain "Mystery Trip" ), Oct. 23 (Charlotte Museum of History & Nathaniel Alexander Home site), Nov. 13 (Schiele Museum of Natural History), and Dec. 19 (Hanes Mall & Tanglewood "Festival of Lights").  Time: 9:00am-4:00pm.  Fee: $15.00 per date.  Contact:  Karen Howard at 704.336.2344.

Moka's Cafe' -for adult women ages 21 and over with disabilities.  This award winning community based program is for women to gather together once a month to discuss current women's issues.  There will be guest speaker to share information on money management, health & beauty, social etiquette, and much more!  So come and join us to share your thoughts, feelings, and gather valuable information while enjoying your favorite cup of java!  Location:  Starbucks, 1401 East. Blvd.  Dates:  Sept. 5, Oct. 10, Nov. 7, and Dec. 5 (Wednesdays).  Time: 5:00pm-7:00pm. Fee: $10.00 per date.  Contact:  Karen Noel at 704.432.0955.

Fuel For Life -for adult men ages 21 and over with disabilities.  We heard you want your own men's group and we have answered your request...come hang with the guys, fuel your body with pizza, and fuel your life with good conversation.  Fuel for Life is a new community based program that provides young men the opportunity to talk about issues they're facing in their lives.  Each week we will host guest speakers and discuss different topics, such as employment and job skills, relationships, life goals, values, and other topics that are important to you.  Location:  Fuel Pizza, 4267 Park Road.  Dates:  Sept. 5, Oct. 3, Nov. and Dec. 5.  Time:  6:00pm-8:00pm.  Fee:  $10.00 per date.  Contact:  Angela Conti at 704.527.0237.

Moka's Petite-for teen girls ages 15-21 with disabilities.  This new community based program will meet once a month to discuss teen issues.  There will be guest speakers to share information from character development, social etiquette, beauty tips, to home and personal safety.  So join us at Starbucks and share your thoughts, feelings, and ideas with friends over a cup of your favorite beverage.  Location:  Starbucks, 1401 East. Blvd.  Dates:  Sept. 11, Oct. 16, Nov. 13, and Dec. 11.  Time: 5:30pm-7:30pm.  Fee: $10.00 per date.  Contact:  Karen Noel at 704.432.0955.

Give-a-Little -for teens and young adults ages 13-21 with disabilities.  If you have a big heart and enjoy helping others, then we'd love to see you at Give-a-Little.  We will spend time volunteering in the community with Circle K, a UNCC volunteer organization.  Transportation will be provided and participants will benefit from the positive interactions with young adults attending college, professional supervision throughout the project, and gaining work skills as well as a sense of giving back to the community.  Lending your time and a helping hand is a fun way to make new friends and help out your community.  Location:  Marion Diehl Recreation Center.  Dates: Time: 12:30pm-3:00pm.  Fee: $50.00.  Contact:  Angela Conti at 704.527.0237.

FunKee Feet -for youth and teens 6-21 with disabilities.  Have fun while learning the latest in Hip-Hop, Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Creative Movement.  This program is designed to give every participant the opportunity to interact with each other while expressing themselves through the art of dance.  Location:  Bette Rae Recreation Center, 2921 Tuckaseegee Road.  Dates:  Sept. 19-Nov. 28 (Wednesdays).  Time: 5:30pm-7:00pm.  Fee: $40.00.  Contact:  Vernice Gallon at 704.432.3049. 

PACT (Parents & Children Together)-for ages 6 and up with disabilities.  A new program that promotes interaction between parents / caregivers and children through fun and exciting recreational activities.  Each session may offer activities such as crafts, cooking, outdoor adventures, music, and dancing!  So come and discover new past-times and bonding with your child.  Location:  Marion Diehl Recreation Center.  Dates:  Oct. 5 (Nature under the stars nature program at Reedy Creek Nature Preserve), and Dec. 1 (Holiday Happenings...crafts, games, and more).  Time: Varies per activity, so call for times.  Fee:  $20.00 per date.  Contact:  Vernice Gallon at 704.432.3049.
