Internships

The Therapeutic Recreation Division provides a training site for internships in the field of Therapeutic Recreation. Students who are interested in a community-based TR program can contact Kerri E. Good, TR Manager at 704.527.0237 or email Kerri.Good@mecklenburgcountync.gov.

 About the Therapeutic Recreation Division

The Therapeutic Recreation Division of MCPRD is one of the largest community-based TR programs in the state of North Carolina.  The TR Division currently employs 18 full-time professional staff, including 11 CTRS's.  The TR Division provides leisure and recreation activities for a variety of populations through two sections:  the Special Populations section and the Select Populations section.

The Special Populations section consists entirely of CTRS's, and focuses its efforts on citizens who have disabilities.  Some of the diagnoses addressed by the Special Populations section include:

  • Down Syndrome
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Visual Impairments
  • Hearing Impairments
  • Autism
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Angelman's Syndrome
  • Spina Bifida
  • Other developmental or physical disabilities

The Select Populations section consists of professional staff, including CTRS's as well as staff with advanced degrees and/or specialized training and skills.  The Select Populations section coordinates activities for citizens with cultural or economic barriers to a full leisure lifestyle.  Focus areas include:

  • Youth-At-Risk, consisting of: adjudicated youth, substance use/abuse, teen pregnancy, childhood abuse and neglect, and truancy/dropout
  • City Within A City (CWAC) which are threatened and endangered neighborhoods
  • Individuals and families who are homeless or in transitional housing
