Mecklenburg County Nature Preserves
|
Nature preserves provide habitat for both common and rare plants and animals, preserve the beauty of Mecklenburg's natural areas and provide sites for educational activities and the observation of wiildlife & natural communities. Many preserves also offer passive outdoor recreation opportunities compatible with the protection of the natural area.
Conservation Science Specialist, Sudie Daves, uses a drip torch to ignite the edge of a grassland restoration area during a prescribed burn at Cowan's Ford Wildlife Refuge. Flames can be seen in the background and the crackling sounds are from pockets of fast-burning switchcane. Click here to view a brief video clip (6.24mB).
