Jay Stroud was at Auten Nature Preserve when this tangle of snakes caught his eye.

From the look of things it seemed as if the Kingsnake was dominating the Copperhead ( Kingsnakes have a tolerance to many types of venom).

In the end it was clear; the Copperhead was dinner for this killer Kingsnake. Looks like everyone needs one of these hunters in their backyards!

To see a live kingsnake, visit the Nature Centers at either the McDowell Nature Preserve or the Reedy Creek Nature Preserve.

Bobcat Siting While using trail cameras to conduct a deer census at the McDowell Nature Preserve, Mecklenburg County Division of Natural Resources staff photographed a bobcat. The photo was taken on September 21st at approximately 8:30 pm. Until now the last sighting to be documented in the Division of Natural Resources database was on Tom Short Road, March 1, 2003. Though much less common than they used to be, bobcats are still present in limited numbers in the more rural areas of Mecklenburg County where development is rapidly removing the habitat that bobcats need for survival.
