Barred Owl Project
Note:  Both owlets fledged the nest on Friday, April 28.  One left around 2:00pm and the other left at 6:41pm.  View the last of the clips below.  Please email us and let us know what you thought about this project.

As part of our Cavity-Nesting Bird Monitoring Program, the Division of Natural Resources is partnering with UNC-Charlotte biology professor Rob Bierregaard to study the nesting habitats of Barred Owls in the North Carolina Piedmont.
Rob Bierregaard

In April 2006, a pair of Barred Owls were monitored while raising two young in a nest box deep within Reedy Creek Nature Preserve.  Click on the links below to view activities within the box.  Most video clips are approximately 30 seconds long and usually include one of the parents delivering food to the juvenile owls.  Typical prey include: rodents, crayfish, lizards, snakes, birds, and large insects.   Stay tuned - each day new video clips will be posted.
