Future of Park & Rec Facilities

The Park and Recreation 10 Year Master Plan (2008-2018) reflects citizens' desire for more parks, recreation and nature preserves.

Voters passed $250-million in Park and Recreation bonds on November 4, 2008. Some projects paid for with these bonds and other bonds are subject to possible delays because of the deteriorating economy and falling tax revenue. Mecklenburg's Board of County Commissioners has agreed to go on a "debt diet"  Commissioners have determined that $20 million of bonds from a 2004 referendum cannot be issued as originally scheduled. This will delay some new parks and greenway projects. County Manager Harry Jones said delays are necessary to reduce unexpected and significant budget gaps.
