This facility was dedicated in memory of Mr. Thomas Howard Sykes on April 12, 2007.  Mr. Sykes served as Vice Chair of the Park and Recreation Commission from 1999-2000 and chair of the Central Park District III Advisory Council from 1999-2003. 

 

Visit our beautiful recreation center located with Dilworth Elementary School and take advantage of many fun programs and activities.  Come by and visit our friendly staff who look forward to serving you!

Tom Sykes Rec Center offers ongoing programs for children and adults - piano lessons, aerobic/dance class, karate and much more. Visit Eparks to sign up for one of these or one of our many other programs.

Programs Available:

Middle School Mania:
Let loose with other local Middle School students for a night of Foosball, Air Hockey, Ping Pong, Wii TV, Dance Dance Revolution, Open Gym and more. Next MSM on August 28th, 2009 from 7pm-8:30pm!!!. Participants must register in advance. Come with an appetite because Pizza and Refreshments will be here too! Cost is $5.

Youth Yoga Classes:
Kids Classes on Wednesday's, 4:00-4:45pm for ages 6-11, and Teen Classes from 5:15-6:15 for ages 12-17. Pre-school classes, ages 3-5, from 3:15 - 3:45pm. All classes are taught by Craig Colistra, Recreation Specialist at Tom Sykes Recreation Center and YogaFit Kids Certified Instructor. Yoga for kids improves body awareness and coordination, boosts mental concentration and attention, encourages creative expression and many other benefits. Call 704-432-4806 to register.

Teen Environmental Project

Attention all Teenagers!!!!! Interested in a Healthy Environment? Clean Water? Clean Parks? Enjoy the Outdoors? . Take action to help protect our local environment and educate others on ways to conserve the local resources and reduce pollution. We will learn about the condition of our local resources, flora and fauna, and ways to protect them, we will plan community projects (looks great on college resumes),  and take Field Trips i.e. Kayaking, Hiking, Camping, exploring and enjoying nature.  Contact Craig at Tom Sykes Recreation Center at 704-432-4806 or craig.colistra@mecklenburgcountync.gov.

Start Smart Basketball

Start Smart Basketball is a program of the National Alliance for Youth Sports that teaches children (ages 3-5) the basic motor skills necessary to play organized basketball. The program focuses on teaching children and their parents basic sports mechanics without the threat of competition or the fear of injury. Sessions are held once a week for 6 weeks beginning Thursday September 10th, 2009 from 6-7p in the Gymnasium.

Fitness Classes

Urban Shimmy Fitness Class, eclectic mix of belly dance and hip hop-inspired moves craftily put to popular music with infectious beat and rhythms Mondays, 6:30p, go to www.queencitydancingqueen.com or call Angie, 704-526-8845.

Youth Soccer
A recreational program that teaches the fundamentals of the sport in a fun competitive atmosphere. Ages 4-12. $55. Registration starts July 1st, season starts Sept. 5th. Contact Craig at 704-432-4806 to register or craig.colistra@mecklenburgcountync.gov

Youth Flag Football
