A Brief History

Of the twenty-six recreation centers in the County; Enderly Recreation Center was one of the oldest, built in 1948.  It had served the community well but had become outdated and has now been replaced and renamed Bette Rae Thomas Recreation Center.

The new Bette Rae Thomas Recreation Center contains a Gymnasium, Multi-Purpose Rooms, Senior Activity Room, Computer Lab, After-School Room, Youth Activity Room and an Adult Fitness Center.

This brand new facility is approximately 21,000 square feet and offers permanent program space to senior and after-school participants while the multi-purpose rooms will be available for public rental to accommodate family gatherings and events.  Additional program opportunities will be available to the public using the Youth Activity Room and Computer Lab. The Fitness Room offers state of the art cardio and resistance equipment in over 1,200 square feet.

The recreation center is named for Bette Rae Thomas; an esteemed resident of Enderly Park affectionately known to neighbors as "Miss Bette."  She is the longtime coordinator of the Enderly Park Neighborhood Association.  Miss Bette lobbied Charlotte City Council and the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners for neighborhood improvements and enhanced park facilities.  Neighbors petitioned the Park and Recreation Commission to name the center in her honor.  The center was dedicated October 13, 2005.
