Fitness Centers

 Get moving in a healthy direction. Come join one of our Fitness Centers for a great balanced workout. We offer cardiovascular, weight resistance, and free weight equipment at a great economic value.  Bette Rae Thomas Recreation Center, First Ward Recreation Center, Tuckaseegee Recreation Center, Southview Recreation Center and Mallard Creek Recreation Center have a Fitness Coordinator on site who can help you take that first step to a healthier you.

Meet our Fitness Coordinators:

Tisshue Wilson graduated in 1999, from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelors of Science degree in Exercise Science, with a focus in health promotion and education. Tisshue began her career with Park and Recreation in 2001 as a Recreation Leader. She became a Fitness Coordinator in 2004.

Erin Bayer graduated from UNC-Wilmington in 2004, with a degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Community Health.  She is currently working on her Masters Degree in Public Health.  Erin worked as a personal trainer and group exercise instructor teaching yoga, pilates, and a variety of cardio classes for four years at UNC-Wilmington.  After graduating, she worked as a Fitness Coordinator for a non-profit organization for seniors and served as the County Coordinator for the Senior Games in Pender County.  Erin is a member of the International Council for Active Aging and the American Public Health Association.

Calvin Covington comes to us with six years of experience, which three were spent as a Physical Education teacher. Calvin graduated from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a degree in Exercise Science. While at Tennessee he was involved with all aspects of strength and conditioning college athletes.

James Brown has been involved in physical activity for over 10 years. He graduated with a degree in Exercise Physiology then completed a Master's in Health and Fitness Management. He is a major contributor to the health and fitness community through education, program development and counseling. He is active member of the Health and Fitness Council of Mecklenburg County, Strength & Conditioning organization (NSCA) and Professional Tennis Registry. James is a certified personal trainer, stability ball specialist, tennis instructor and writes fitness articles for various organizations.

Fit City Challenge:
The Fit City Challenge is a community level initiative to encourage and empower program participants to increase their level of physical activity and fruit and vegetable consumption. Go to www.fitcitychallenge.org register on this dynamic interactive website.

Fit City Walkers:

Join our Fit City Walkers to start your steps towards fitness. Walking is a simple way increase your physical activity and lead you to a healthier life. Here are some tips to get in more steps during the course of the day and to increase your physical activity.

  • Take a walking break instead of a coffee break at work.
  • Park in the farthest space from your destination.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Walk the dog instead of just letting it out in the yard.
  • Track your step/miles each day by using a pedometer.
  • Hide the remote and get up to change the channel.
  • Turn off the TV and go for a walk.

Fit City Challenge members, come use our parks and facilities to get your "5" miles in a week. We have numerous parks, greenways, and trails throughout the county for you to enjoy. Listed below are many places to take a walk in our great natural settings.

Greenways: Campbell Creek, Irwin Creek, Little Sugar Creek, Mallard and Clark's Creek, McAlpine Creek, McMullen Creek and Torrence Creek.

Parks: Freedom Park, Hornets Nest Park, Jetton Park, Latta Plantation Park, McAlpine Creek Park, Nevin Park, Park Road Park, Reedy Creek Park, Thomas McAllister Winget Park.

Recreation Centers: Raining, too hot or cold to walk outside…well we have an alternate for you. For a nominal fee you can use one of our fitness centers located at the following facilities: First Ward Recreation Center, Mallard Creek Recreation Center, Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center, Ray's Splash Planet, Southview Recreation Center, Tuckaseegee Recreation Center, West Charlotte Recreation Center and Bette Rae Thomas Recreation Center.  Each fitness center has cardiovascular equipment, including treadmills, weight resistance equipment and free weights.
