Model Vision - Neighborhood Capacity
Goal:  Neighborhood organizations have the capacity to manage themselves and build relationships that are beneficial to neighborhood success.

1.  Model Neighborhood Indicator:
  Neighborhood residents know each other.

Standard Service Delivery
  • City staff can work with neighborhood organizations to plan events that encourage residents to come out and get to know each other.

What Neighborhoods Can Do:
  • Get organized; join your neighborhood association.
  • Create a social committee to welcome new residents and organize annual community gatherings.
  • Use Neighborhood Matching Grants on a timely basis to assist with neighborhood festivals.

2.  Model Neighborhood Indicator: Organizations are established with a clear vision and mission.

Standard Service Delivery:
  • Neighborhood Development offers Community University leadership classes and customized neighborhood training to address vision and mission statements.
  • Staff provides technical assistance to address this issue in individual neighborhoods.

3.  Model Neighborhood Indicator:  Neighborhood organizations are able to identify and solve neighborhood problems.

  • Community police also assist with problem solving initiatives.
  • Community Relations Committee provides Conflict Resolution training and mediation services.

What Neighborhoods Can Do:
  • Actively participate and implement problem solving training techniques.

  Neighborhood leadership is politically active and astute.

  • Skills can be cultivated through Community University and other training opportunities offered by Neighborhood Development and affiliates.

What Neighborhoods Can Do:
  • Contact Neighborhood Development to register neighborhood leaders in Community University or other customized training.
  • Contact and network with other neighborhood leaders and attend neighborhood association meetings and community forums such as the Neighborhood Symposium.
  • Attend or watch Charlotte City Council and Mecklenburg County Commission meetings.
  • Invite elected representatives to neighborhood meetings to discuss community issues and interests.


5.  Model Neighborhoods Indicator:
  Residents are accountable for problem solving and long-term sustainability.

8.  Model Neighborhood Indicator:  Neighborhood organization establishes partnerships with City and County governments as well as private and non-profit organizations.
 
Standard Service Delivery
  • Neighborhood organizations register with Charlotte Mecklenburg Planning Commission and update contact information as appropriate.
  • City staff works with all community based entities, Action Team staff (where applicable) and other entities to ensure proper service delivery to residents.
  • Residents learn to access resources through leadership training or other free training sessions offered by Neighborhood Development and Mecklenburg County's Fighting Back Program.

  • Neighborhood Development and police work with community organization leadership to recruit new members, keep residents informed and encourage participation.

  Neighborhood leaders regularly communicate problems and subsequent resolutions to all residents.
