Lead Based Paint Hazard Reduction
The Lead Based Paint Hazard Reduction Program provides grants to assist low-income homeowners in addressing unsafe lead paint conditions that pose a potential health hazard to young children. The program is designed to assist owners of single-family dwellings and investor owners of properties with two or more bedrooms.  Since the program's inception in 1998, the City of Charlotte has received over $11 million to reduce lead hazards in over 1300 homes.

LeadSafe Charlotte Outreach Program
LeadSafe Charlotte is leading the way in protecting children from the dangers of lead.  As part of our commitment of creating safe, lead-free environments for families, LeadSafe Charlotte provides a wide range of services, including:
  • Information and education on the hazards of lead exposure
  • Free lead inspections at your home
  • Free testing of children
  • Free clean up, painting, repair and rehabilitating your home or rental property.
Lead is a toxic metal.  Lead paint, the primary source of lead poisoning, creates invisible lead duct and paint chips, which can cause permanent damage to the developing central nervous system if ingested or inhaled.  Children can get lead poisoning many ways, including chewing on windowsills, floors, toys or contaminated soil, and then putting their hands into their mouths.  Pets that play in contaminated soil can also harm your children.

Should my home be tested?
  • Was your home built before 1978?
  • Are children under the age of six living in your home or visiting it often?
  • Are you pregnant?
Should my child be tested for lead poisoning?
If you determine that your house needs testing by answering the questions above, then your child should be tested.  It's easy and free.  Blood testing is free to qualifying families.  Contact the Mecklenburg County Health Department at 704.336.5381 or the LeadSafe Charlotte Hotline at 704.336.2114.
