Housing counseling services are divided into two areas - pre-homeownership and post-homeownership. Pre-homeownership counseling is administered by Community Link. Post-homeownership counseling is offered through Consumer Credit Counseling.
Pre-Homeownership Counseling
Pre-homeownership services include improving knowledge of budgeting, credit repair, mortgage loan approval, assisting in locating a home, and assisting in negotiating mortgage loan terms, purchase price and mortgage loan closing process.
To be eligible for this program a person must meet the following criteria:
- Earn 80% or less of median income
- Purchase a house in a targeted neighborhood
- Asset in obtaining an approved first mortgage
- Obtain a valid purchase contract
Post-Homeownership Counseling
Post-homeownership services include late payment avoidance, foreclosure prevention, repayment plans, forbearance, negotiating with lenders and debt management.
United Family Services' Consumer Credit Counseling focuses on individuals and families that are facing foreclosures or eviction. Without their services, many of these residents could become homeless.
