The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office serves as a county agency operating within the auspices of the North Carolina Medical Examiner system.
 
The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office interacts with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to assist in investigations. In addition to providing reports, the pathologists also testify in court as to the cause and manner of death.
 
 
Death Under Unususal Circumstances
The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office is primarily responsible for death investigation under specific circumstances:
  • Natural deaths in individuals without a physician
  • Unexpected deaths in otherwise healthy individuals
  • All accidental, suicidal,  homicidal, traumatic or violent deaths
  • Deaths under unusual conditions
The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office has three forensic pathologists who are responsible for overseeing every death investigation that happens at the MEO. The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office investigates approximately 1300 cases annually.
 
Disease Monitoring
The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office also links with the Mecklenburg County Health Department for purposes of disease monitoring.
 
The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office also serves as a regional pathology center serving Anson, Union, Cabarrus, Rowan, Cleveland and Stanly counties. The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office provides investigative, technical and pathology support to the medical examiners appointed to those counties.
