The Lucky Hearts Campaign
|
|
Few calls test the skills of our paramedics more than a cardiac arrest. These calls are also the ones where the public has the best opportunity to help save a life. Research has shown us that once someone's heart stops, their chance of survival decreases by 10% each minute. Bystander cpr and early defibrillation not only increase the chances of survival but may even be enough to allow the patient's heart to restart. One of the hallmarks of Medic's Community Education efforts has long been strong partnerships. Working with organizations within our community help make our programs stronger.

The Alliance has devoted itself to improving healthcare in our community. Their Endowment has been used to fund projects as varied as a DNA machine for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and a year-long campaign to help parents protect their children.
The MMAE and Medic have partnered together to create The Lucky Hearts Campaign, a long-term project focused on increased cardiac arrest survival thru advocacy, education, and the increased availability of defibrillators (AEDs) in the community.

Program Specifics:
During 2009, our goal is to train AT LEAST 1000 people and deploy AT LEAST 20 defibrillators (AEDs) in this community. Medic will be offering FREE cpr classes to participating businesses and non-profits. Once training has been completed, the MMAE will be providing each participating group with a FREE AED. Medic will assist in not only determining the appropriate placement for the device, but also in developing a response plan.
Organizations that are willing to train at least 50 people in cpr are encouraged to apply. Classes will take approximately 90 minutes and Medic will provide refreshments for the students. We will be focusing on organizations with larger numbers of employees/participants. There will also be special consideration given to non-profit organizations.
|
Application:
Applications are being accepted as of November 24th, 2008 and the process will stay open until July 30th, 2009. MMAE and MEDIC officials will jointly review all applications on a first come, first served basis, and will notify each applicant within thirty days as to the status of their request. For more information, contact Kristin Young.
