A new mobile data system, developed by Mecklenburg EMS Agency, has earned a prestigious Blue Diamond Award for Best Corporate Use of Information Technology.
The computer based mapping and information system in each ambulance helps guide paramedic teams to emergency calls, hospitals and other locations around Mecklenburg County. It replaces outdated and cumbersome map books as the field team's most important navigational tool. Use of the new technology has resulted in reduced response times, improvements in overall system performance, and enhanced employee satisfaction.
"We wanted to develop a tool that would be helpful to our crews and enhance patient care at the same time," said Barry Bagwell, Medic's Communications Manager. "I believe we've accomplished that and receiving the Blue Diamond Award is a wonderful recognition of our efforts," he said.
The Blue Diamond Award, sponsored by the Charlotte Chamber and Information Technology Charlotte, recognizes the accomplishments of technology-based solutions and contributions made by Charlotte area companies and individuals.
Medic teamed up with Bradshaw Consulting Services, Inc. to develop the mobile data system. In addition to providing real time mapping and a suggested route, the system also records important time stamp information that helps Medic judge overall performance.
Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services Agency provides emergency and non-emergency medical services to the citizens of Mecklenburg County. The Agency answers approximately 70,000 calls for medical help each year and conducts frequent community education programs on health, safety, injury prevention and emergency related issues.
Medic is part of a unique partnership between Mecklenburg County, Carolinas Healthcare System and Presbyterian Healthcare/Novant Health. Since fiscal year 1997, Medic has reduced ambulance response times, implemented higher clinical standards and reduced taxpayer subsidy per call by half.
