Each year Medic selects "Stars of Life." These are employees who embody the spirit of EMS and are singled out for their performance during a specific event or over their career.
Our 2008 Recipients are Operations Supervisor David Brown, and Telecommunicator Rhona Nelson.
David Brown was off duty and was on his way home when he saw a terrible accident occur in which the vehicle caught fire. David did not hesitate and sprang into action. The vehicle exploded ejecting the occupant and David pulled the man who, was burned and unconscious to safety. He is the epitome of strength, courage and fearlessness. His commitment to the betterment of the community has brought him to this day or recognition and we are very proud of David and his accomplishments.
Rhona Nelson started a tradition at our Agency of organizing an annual bake sale to raise money to help sponsor a family in need each holiday season. She most recently helped organize a bake sale for a 911 Communications' employee in Arlington, Virginia who suffered a string of losses. After reading an article on the "911 Cares" website, Rhona quickly organized a bake that raised money for an individual who she has never met. Rhona also organized and personally delivered care packages and donations to the Communications personnel during the tragic loss of Firefighters lives last year in Charleston, South Carolina. To say Rhona is a compassionate giving person just begins to describe her.
Rhona also practically single handedly helped mobilize a mass representation of MEDIC for the first annual "Salute the Heroes" recognition at a Charlotte Checkers hockey game. She sits on several committees at MEDIC and takes interest in many activities that supports local charities.
