Prior to becoming Mayor of Charlotte, Philip VanEvery was the Mayor Pro Tem.

Personal:
VanEvery, a grandson of the founder of Lance, Inc., was one it its executives.

During his Administration:

• Ovens Auditorium and the Charlotte Coliseum were dedicated.
• Independence Boulevard was completed.
• Park Road Shopping Center, the first suburban shopping center, opened. It's opening touched off an annexation fight.
