Frederick S. DeWolfe (1880-1883)

DeWolfe served as Charlotte's Mayor from 1880 until 1883.

Personal:
DeWolfe was an assistant cashier at Merchants and Farmers National Bank.

  • The first cotton mill in the city opened at Sixth and Graham streets in 1881. It employed 70 workers, mostly women, who cleaned, spun and wove cotton thread into cloth.
  • The first city tax-supported grade school opened in 1882. This event began the modern school system.
  • Charlotte's first school for black students opened in the basement of an Episcopal Church.
