Internship At The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office Work Release and Restitution Center

The Mecklenburg County Work Release and Restitution Center provides outstanding work/training experience for interns. The work/training programs are designed to meet the trainees and the correctional program's needs. Internships are available in the Work Release and Restitution Center (WRRC), located on the corner of McDowell Street and Elizabeth Avenue in uptown Charlotte. The WRRC houses adult offenders nearing release. The program has a strong focus on treatment, addiction services, education, family and community involvement and counseling.

The intern work experience at the WRRC includes such activities as supervision of residents, adjustment board member, supervisor of recreational trips, urinalysis collection, treatment team member, resident verifications, crisis intervention and more. There are nonpaid internships and  volunteer positions available.

Internship
Details

  • Approximately 20 hours per week.
  • Working hours may include days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • A minimum of a three (3) month commitment.
  • College credit hours available.
  • Outstanding training experiences.

Training
Interns are assigned to a supervisor and receive weekly individualized training, as well as in service and on-the-job training.

Qualification
Requirements

  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Completion of at least three years of college, with one year in criminal justice, a behavioral science or human service.
  • Interest in a career in the human services field or corrections.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • There will be a background check.

Selection
Selection of interns is based on a personal interview with our staff.

Administrative Support Asst. III – Civil Judgment Unit
*Job 4279*

All Civil support staff is cross trained to perform all support duties for the Civil Judgments Unit including receptionist/front lobby duties.  The individual will serve as clerical support fulfilling administrative duties in the daily support of the Civil Judgments Unit.  Must be able to communicate with attorneys, the public, work with sworn staff, and other User Agencies over the telephone and at the lobby window.  Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills.  Will accept payments for money owed upon Execution Processes in the form of certified checks and cash ensuring accurate recordkeeping of these transactions from time of acceptance until logged out of the courier for further processing and deposit.  Reports through a sworn Chain of Command supervisor system.  Ability to speak and understand Spanish is preferred.  Clerical duties include, but are not limited to, data entry, handling and typing correspondence, ensuring accurate recordkeeping, scheduling appointments and assisting with the preparation of special reports.  Work location is in the new Mecklenburg County Courthouse.

High School Diploma, or G.E.D., and four years of progressively responsible clerical experience in area of assignment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Librarian – Jail Central

Duties:

Manage the delivery of reference and information services (traditional and electronic) in a busy library to a diverse population including adult men and women and young adult females. .  50% of time will focus on law library duties.

Supervise 1part time library assistant and 1 part time administrative assistant.  In addition to paid assistants, inmate library clerks provide some routine support.  These persons are supervised in a similar manner to employees with limited duties.

Assist with collection management for branch;

Planning for technology and program expansion and decision-making are accomplished in conjunction with Manager of Library Services

Assist MCSO staff with on demand reference/research service

Lead and develop programs such as a women's book club; library instruction, and

Demonstrate a commitment to excellent customer service.

Recruitment Standards:    Masters in Library Science from a program approved by the American Library Association or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Licensing Requirements:  NC Public Librarian Certification.  Advanced computer literacy for research and circulation software is a plus.  Knowledge of statutory and case law research is preferred.  Knowledge of the Spanish language is preferred.

Librarian – Youth & Young Adult

This is a new position that will serve youth at Gatling Juvenile Detention Center and young adults at Jail North and Jail Central. Youth are both male & female.  This person will work closely with librarians from PLCMC and other service providers from the community.  In addition to leisure reading, progressive, innovative programming will be the major focus of services. Applicants must be willing to work with an at risk population in a detention facility.

Adult programming may be involved occasionally. 

Provides advanced library services to Youthful offenders, juveniles & YA in MCSO custody;  Develops & presents age-appropriate programs for youth and young adults; Assists in teen and YA collection development; Assists youth with finding information in print and electronic formats; May serve as Person-in-Charge in absence of

the JN or JC librarian; Monitor programs and assist providers in and out of the classroom; Other duties may develop as this new position evolves.

Administrative Support Asst. II -Jail Central Admin.

Provides daily clerical support for the Jail Central Administrative staff.  Assists the Reality Program Director by screening applicants, coordinating tours and acting as a liaison for the school resource officers and the program director. Maintains essential paperwork and collects statistical data for reports.  Provides backup for other support staff as needed.   Position requires someone with good organizational and time management skills.  Proficiency in computer skills, spelling, grammar, and customer service are essential.

Recruitment Standards:

High School Diploma, or G.E.D., and two years of clerical experience in area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations and departmental policies and procedures are required at this level.
