Jail Central

801 East Fourth Street, Charlotte, NC  28202

MCJ-Central is a direct supervision facility which opened for occupancy in February 1997. The building combines an arrest processing center and a pre-trial detention facility. It also houses a full service medical component, which includes an infirmary, centralized property storage, administrative services and various support services.

Directions to Jail-Central:

Jail-Central is a large, eight-story building located at 801 E. 4th St. in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Plaza near Charlotte Center City. It is in the same block with the Historic Mecklenburg County Courthouse. That block is bounded by 4th, Alexander, E. Trade and McDowell streets. The main entrance faces 4th st. The entrance for Police vehicles and Service vehicles is off of McDowell Street.

Headed south on I-77:

  1. Take Exit 11A to I-277 (Brookshire Freeway)
  2. Continue on I-277; it will become the John Belk Freeway
  3. Take Exit 2A (NC 16 and 3rd and 4th streets)
  4. Turn left onto 4th St.
  5. After you pass the next stoplight the jail will be the tall building on your right, 801 E. 4th St.

Headed North on I-77:

  1. Take Exit 9A to I-277 (John Belk Freeway)
  2. Take exit 2A (NC 16, 3rd and 4th streets)
  3. Follow signs to 4th St.
  4. Turn left onto 4th St.
  5. After you pass the second stoplight, the jail will be the tall building on your right, 801 E. 4th St

From I-85:

  1. Take I-77 South
  2. Follow directions for heading south on I-77

Public Transportation:  Jail-Central is served by the Charlotte Transit Authority and the free downtown shuttle.

Jail-Central Parking:  There is a parking deck on Davidson St. between 3rd and 4th streets. The entrance to the parking deck is off of Davidson. Limited street parking is available on 4th Street.
