Yes...Charlotte Mecklenburg School Have to Recycle!

Does Our School Have To Recycle?

The answer is ...   YES!

Mecklenburg County has a Recycling Ordinance that requires schools that generate 16 cubic yards (approximately two 8-yard dumpsters) of trash per week to keep cardboard and paper out of their trash dumpster.  A school can be fined if it is not in compliance with the Recycling Ordinance.

Mecklenburg County Board of County Commissioners and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education signed an Interlocal Agreement for Solid Waste and Recycling Collection Services.  The Interlocal Agreement states that CMS will cooperate fully with implementing a recycling program in its facilities.

Why Recycling Is Good For Our Schools
Recycling demonstrates environmental stewardship to students and reinforces environmental science curriculums.  Recycling can reduce trash disposal service cost.  CMS has recycled over 2,500 tons of mixed paper and cardboard since 1998.  By recycling, 64 schools have been able to reduce trash services, resulting in estimated savings of $50,000.00 annually.
