Buy Durable Goods

Buy durable, reuaable and rechargable products.

When you buy durable, reusable products, you ensure that the items will last longer, cost less over time, and reduce waste from product disposal and product packaging. When you shop:

  • Compare brands and models, and ask about warranties. Durable products last longer and cost less over the life of the product. The more willing a company is to provide a strong warranty, the more confidence they have in the quality and durability of their product. A little up-front research will save you money and hassles in the long run.
  • Select products that can be easily maintained or upgraded. Simple cleaning may prolong the life of the product. (Vacumn the coils of refrigerator, dryer and freezers twice a year).
  • Determine if there are local repair services available for the make and model of the product you are considering.
  • Ask if the manufacturer has a program to "take back" their product at the end of its useful life.

Consider energy-efficient rechargeable batteries instead of single-use batteries. They cost a little more, but they last a lot longer. Imagine not having to put batteries on your shopping list for the next few years. Depending on how you use them, rechargeable batteries can be recharged 10 to 50 times. When your rechargeable battery no longer holds a charge, it’s recyclable at many Radio Shack and other retail locations. Visit the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation or call 1-800-8 BATTERY for more information and additional recycling locations. You can also bring your used household batteries to any Mecklenburg County Full Service Centers. Do not place batteries in your recycling bin.
