Type: Master Composter
City: Charlotte
Launch: Trinity Episcopal Church
Location: Uptown Charlotte at the Episcopal Church School
Project: Composting with worms
Funding: Donated some material, Mecklenburg County, Trinity Episcopal
Hours: 25
Helpers: My 6 yo daughter Alessandra Scala, teachers from Trinity Episcopal
Overview:
Composting with worm is fun !!! Talk to 2 separate kindergarten classes about worms and their role as composter
Description: Build two vermicomposting bins
Add bedding
Mush and mix worm food
Free the worms in their new home
Talk to the children how to maintain the bins
Implementation: Met with both teachers on 2 occasions, outlined with them the scope of the class, gave some homework for the teachers such as gather food for the worms.
On the day of the class my daughter helped me in a show and tell kind of settings where kids could "handle" the worms, ask questions and interact with their new friends. We then shred newspaper wetted it and created the betting for the bins. Kids also decorated the bins by drawing on the outside. We then spread all the worms in the bin and talked about how to keep and maintain the worms.
Recommendations: This experience could be repeated since there was a lot of interest in the matter by both kids and teachers
