Name: Selwyn Elementary Nature Trail Head (at Freedom Park)
Address: Selwyn Elementary School
City: Charlotte, NC
Funding: Boy Scout Project
Approval: Mary Stauble
Overview:
This project is a donation of time in the design and drawing of a site- specific bench that will serve as a mini-theater at the Selwyn Elementary Nature Trail Head, by Marshall Giles of Fort Mill, S.C.
Description:
My role in this project is to design a bench that can be installed as a Boy Scout Project. The bench is to be site-friendly, simple in construction, and is to serve also as a mini-theater to provide seating for students while teachers, guides, and instructors give Trail Head talks.
The plan will also include a couple bed layouts for the school to use to transplant native plants existing in other areas of the school's campus.
In addition to the bench design, I will provide Carla Vitez with a research case study suggesting options to stop, and prevent, erosion that is occurring in areas along the Nature Trail. It is important that the area be protected and that it remain natural.
Implementation:
The project is currently on hold. Research regarding methods of trail preservation are continuing.
Recommendations & Follow-up:
The Selwyn Elementary Nature Trail will require regular maintenance. It needs volunteers to walk the trail, pick up trash, and help volunteers at the school keep the exotic invasive plants out of the campus, especially along the trails corridor.
The bench design is near complete, and I should be forwarding a copy of the drawing to Carla Vitez in the near future.
The trail erosion study will remain in its research phase no further than spring. I desire to continue looking for options to find the most successful solution possible.
Upon completion of this, I will forward the information to Carla Vitez, and request a meeting to discuss the information in site.
