Town of Matthews Adopts Source Separation Ordinance

Congratulations are in order for the Town of Matthews.  In July, 2008, the Town of Matthews adopted the Source Separation Ordinance. As a result, Mecklenburg County would like to acknowledge and extend its appreciation to Matthews.

The Ordinance will become effective in the Town of Matthews on January 1, 2009. The Ordinance requires businesses contracting 16 cubic yards or more of solid waste per week to keep office paper and corrugated cardboard separate from their trash for the purpose of recycling. Businesses have several recycling options:

  1. Contract their current MSW provider.
  2. Contract an independent recycling service provider. (Listings may be found on the Mecklenburg County Solid Waste & Recycling website www.wipeoutwaste.com or telephoning 704-336-2802.
  3. Self-haul to any Mecklenburg County Recycling Center. (Locations may be located on the Mecklenburg County Solid Waste & Recycling website www.wipeoutwaste.com or telephone 704-336-2802.)
  4. Sponsor a Commercial Recycling Center, if applicable.

Mecklenburg County staff will be responsible for implementing the Ordinance, including the provisions for education, technical assistance, and enforcement. This ordinance is a good first step to encourage smart recycling practices that will increase the life of existing landfills, strengthen the recycling infrastructure, and extend the useful life of our natural resources.
