Organizations Recognized for Waste-Cutting Programs

In May of 2007, a wide variety of businesses, organizations, and three schools, were recognized for their efforts in recycling and waste reduction. Mecklenburg County Solid Waste and Recycling hosted the annual "Business Recognition Awards" ceremony to recognize organizations for their innovative approaches to waste disposal, waste reduction and commitment to recycling.
More than 100 companies are enrolled in the Business Recognition Program. Members must:
- make a three-year commitment to practice waste reduction
- carry on at least one recycling activity
- purchase at least one recycled product
14 mentor firms are committed to recruiting new companies and helping other businesses start programs.

In three years, Herff Jones has reduced paper waste from 34 percent of the waste stream to 12 percent. The company has saved $3,000 in waste hauling fees alone. Silver and cardboard are recycled and sold. The company donates obsolete supplies to CMS. Bottles, cans, batteries, film, and numerous other items are also recycled through private companies.

Celgard, LLC: Most integrated program
|
Celgard established its program in 2001 when it joined the County's Business Recycling Program. In the first year, Celgard reduced its waste going to the landfill by 62 percent and saved $32,200. The current waste management program covers 90 items with procedures for proper reduction of use, re-use, recycling, and safe disposal. Today, Celgard recycles 1.9 tons of materials annually and is a Certified Sony Green Partner.

Shalom Park consists of 12 agencies in more than a dozen buildings on 54 acres. The organization created a greener campus through negotiation, education, and promotion of environmental and social responsibility to 500 staff members and students and more than a thousand members. Shalom Park has also reached out to the community through it spublic Earth Day events.

Lincoln Harris: Outstanding WR&R Employee/Customer Education Program

Lincoln Harris provides recycling opportunities for paper, cardboard, cans and bottles to the six large multi-tenant buildings that they manager (more than 4 million square feet of office and retail space). With more than 15,000 occupants, there is a great deal of turnover, education must be constant and consistent in order to maintain a successful program. Most education is conducted electronically, reducing paper usage. Lincoln Harris recycled 220 tons last year.
