NC Residential Code Effective Dates

The North Carolina Building Code Council (BCC) adopts new codes on a 3 year cycle, approximately matching the cycle used by the International Code Council (ICC). On September 12, 2006, the BCC formally adopted a new North Carolina Residential Code, effective June 1, 2007.

In adopting the new NC Residential Code, the BCC stipulated a transition period of June 1, 2007 through December 31, 2007. This means customers may begin using the new NC Residential Code as of June 1, 2007, and they may also continue using the 2002 NC Residential Code through December 31. However, after December 31, 2007, all One & Two Family Projects must use the new 2006 NC Residential Code.

Copies of the 2006 NC Residential Code will be available in the near future from:

  • The International Code Council (800-766-4452); since ICC fills orders across the country for the International Residential Code, care should be taken to note you are ordering the North Carolina Residential Code.
  • You may also monitor the Department of Insurance website for posting of the new code. Go to www.ncdoi.com, click on Office of State Fire Marshal, click on "Building Codes", click on "State Building Codes", click on "Building Codes-2006 edition-proposed amendments:, click on "Residential Code - 2006 NC amendments" (145 pages).

Questions regarding the above may be directed to Residential Technical Answer Center (RTAC at 704-432-7822), any Trade Chief, the Director of Trades Inspections or the Director of Code Enforcement.
