About the Air Quality Comission

The Mecklenburg County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) established the Mecklenburg County Air Quality Commission (AQC) on October 15, 2002, with the mission and duty to promote the  protection, preservation, and enhancement of the ambient air resources of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.  The purpose of the AQC shall be to provide citizen and stakeholder input to the BOCC, local municipalities and staff through the review and recommendations of air pollution management policies, long range plans, operations and their budgetary impacts in order to achieve this mission.

The functions of the Commission include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Study and review the total ambient air quality program,
  2. Study and evaluate methods of air pollution management and control as may be required or appropriate to keep the air pollution control ordinance abreast of modern technology and scientific developments,
  3. Participate in the appeals review process over "air pollution control" regulations and ordinances,
  4. Conduct public hearing and review and advise on air program actions,
  5. Review the MCAQ program proposed annual budget,
  6. Review and advise regarding permits controlling sources of air pollution, and
  7. Review and advise the local air pollution control programs.

This is a citizen advisory board the meets monthly (4th Mondays).  Appointments will be made by the County Commissioners and are for 3 year terms.  The Commission is comprised of twelve (12) members with at least four (4) members who live in the City of Charlotte, at least one (1) member from the town of Cornelius, Davidson or Huntersville, and at least one (1) member from the town of Matthews, Pineville or Mint Hill.  Membership shall consist of five (5) members from the public and one(1) member from each of the following profession/vocation: health, engineer, industrial, scientist, environmental, attorney and transportation.

The Commission meets every 4th Monday of the month, usually in the E.L. Woods Training Center of the Hal Marshall County Services Center, 700 North Tryon Street, Charlotte, NC.
