Regular employees who work 30 hours/week or more and who contribute to the NC Local Governmental Retirement System or the Charlotte Firefighters' Retirement System may be eligible for short-term or long-term disability benefits if they can't work because of illness, injury or pregnancy. The City provides both short-term disability (accident and sickness) and long-term disability (LTD) coverage. These benefits are provided at no cost to the employee. LTD coverage is provided under the Long-Term Disability (LTD) Plan for employees who are not vested in their retirement system.
Short-Term Disability (A&S) During a short-term illness, injury or pregnancy, you will receive a benefit of 50% of your base weekly earnings beginning on the eighth consecutive day you are away from work due to disability, or after you have exhausted your sick leave. Benefits may continue up to 26 weeks, provided you remain under the care of a physician and submit proof of your continuing disability. Benefits will end if you become eligible to receive a service retirement allowance, early retirement allowance or disability retirement allowance.
Long-Term Disability If your disability continues past 26 weeks and you are not vested in the NC Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System (NCLGERS) or Firefighters' Retirement System, you may be eligible for Disability Retirement under the LTD Plan administered through Unum Provident. If you are vested in the NCLGERS or the Firefighters Retirement System, you may be eligible for Disability Retirement through that plan.
