HEALTH DEPARTMENT RENOVATION: A LITTLE PAIN EQUALS A LOT OF GAIN
May 14, 2008

Charlotte, NC – The Mecklenburg County Health Department's Beatties Ford Road campus is undergoing a transformation. For several months, construction has been underway to renovate the 30-year-old facility, adding 8,000 square feet of new space and 65 parking spaces.

To accommodate several moves within the building, services will be limited all day on Friday, May 16 and until noon on Monday, May 19. All scheduled appointments will be honored but some walk-in services may not be available during these times.

Residents needing services on these dates should call the Health Department switchboard at 704-336-6400 to confirm availability.

"All of our Health Department facilities are experiencing growth in the numbers of residents served," Mecklenburg County Health Director Wynn Mabry said. "Our Board of County Commissioners agreed with us that we must be prepared to meet the needs of our ever-expanding client base."

The $3.4 million makeover for the Beatties Ford Road facility is expected to be completed in September. It will add new space for clinical staff, including HIV and AIDS testing, along with prevention and management programs.

In addition, there will also be more room for the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) supplemental nutrition program. In 2007 alone, the facility saw more than 22,000 WIC clients.

The Health Department opened the 36,000 square-foot Beatties Ford Road campus in 1978 to make health services available to residents in West Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. It's estimated that a large percentage of the center's clientele come from the surrounding area.
