HEALTH DEPARTMENT AWARDED RYAN WHITE PART A GRANT TO ENHANCE REGIONAL HIV/AIDS SERVICES
May 17, 2007

Charlotte, NC – The Mecklenburg County Health Department is the recipient of federal grant funding of $2.85 million for Ryan White Part A. Because Mecklenburg County is the largest provider of HIV/AIDS services in the region, the funding was awarded to Mecklenburg to administer for a six-county region. This is one of the biggest single grants awarded to the Health Department, which will provide needed care and resources to the most vulnerable HIV/AIDS populations.

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) requires the awardee of these funds to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) to all qualified agencies that serve the targeted population and administer funds in accordance with their guidelines.

Grant funds totaling $1,893,000 are currently available to be distributed to eligible providers throughout a six-county region including Anson, Cabarrus, Gaston, Union and Mecklenburg Counties in North Carolina and York County in South Carolina. The monies are designated for outpatient medical care, medical case management, transportation, medications, and other services for HIV/AIDS patients.

This funding was awarded to Mecklenburg County from the Human Resources Services Administration (HRSA) to mitigate the medical effects of HIV/AIDS disease in the six-county area.

Important facts about the grant:

  • Funding will go to eligible applicants in a competitive Request for Proposal (RFP) process available at www.meckhealth.org/ryanwhite. June 29 is the deadline for responding to the RFP.

  • Notification of awards is slated for July 30, 2007.
