The Reynolds Award is bestowed upon the individual member of NCPHA who has made the greatest contribution to public health in North Carolina during the past year. Dr. Keener was honored at the Association’s annual banquet September 27 in Raleigh.
Dr. Keener has served as the medical director for Mecklenburg County for more than 17 years, being responsible for the provision of hands-on medical care in the clinics and supervision of the medical professionals at the department. He serves as team leader and epidemiologist for North Carolina’s (PHRST 7) Public Health Regional Surveillance Team 7.
Dr. Keener also provides medical advice and input on NCPHA policies and procedures, serves as liaison to hospitals and medical, dental, mental health, veterinary, and pharmacy providers. He is the public spokesperson for the agency on medical issues affecting the public’s health and represents the Health Department and Mecklenburg County government in state and national organizations.
The nomination for this prestigious award reads, "Dr. Keener has worked tirelessly to improve the public health in his community and the state and has helped to enhance the NCPHA relationship with the American Public Health Association."
Dr. Stephen Keener is a graduate of Davidson College, the Duke University School of Medicine and the UNC School of Public Health. He is a member of the N.C. Medical Society, Mecklenburg Partnership for Children and is on the board of directors for the Mecklenburg Medical Society.
