WHAT: Do the Write Thing Awards Reception

WHEN:  Tuesday, May 23, 2006
6 - 8 p.m. for interviews and photographs. Media are welcome to attend the dinner.

WHERE: Mint Museum of Art
  2730 Randolph Road, Charlotte, N.C.

WHO: 28 Charlotte-Mecklenburg middle school students who submitted winning entries in the Do the Write Thing Essay Challenge, along with their teachers.

WHY: The Mecklenburg County Health Department's Fighting Back Program and Project Safe Neighborhoods will honor area middle school students for entering the seventh annual Do the Write Thing Essay Challenge. Students were asked to creatively express how youth violence affects their lives, causes of youth violence and what can be done to stop it.

Keynote speaker will be Kevin B. Kendricks, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Charlotte field office. Mr. Kendricks was the first African-American named to this position in North Carolina.
